Sleep Apnea Treatment

What are your treatment options?

Treatment options for obstructive sleep apnea include:

  • Breathing Devices (PAP Therapy)
  • Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT or Dental Appliance)
  • Hypoglossal Nerve Stimulation (Inspire Brand)
  • eXcite OSA
  • Mouth and Throat Surgery
  • Positioning Therapy (Back Sleep Avoidance)
  • Weight Reduction
  • And More

What treatment is right for you?

CPAP or BIPAP can be used for mild, moderate, and severe sleep apnea. If you have severe sleep apnea, the use of PAP therapy (CPAP, BIPAP) should be considered as the initial treatment.

An oral appliance is appropriate in mild to moderate sleep apnea but can be considered in severe sleep apnea if you have failed PAP therapy previously and don’t want to try again, or if you don’t think you can tolerate PAP. A dentist who is experienced in dental sleep medicine should manage the dental evaluation, selection of an oral appliance, and adjustment of the therapy.

If you have failed PAP and/or oral appliance therapy, Inspire can be considered for individuals who meet specific criteria.

Ready for Treatment?

Treatment usually requires a prescription for the therapy that is chosen and should be managed by health care personnel (ideally a sleep practitioner) who will oversee the treatment, make changes as needed, use additional sleep testing to evaluate the effectiveness of the therapy, and initiate other treatment as needed.
